Biden’s last global summit: Prepares to meet world leaders in APEC, G20 as Trump returns to power

Nov 15, 2024

US outgoing President Joe Biden headed to Lima, Peru on Nov 14 for a symbolic farewell tour with global leaders, capping over 50 years in US politics. Yet, much of the buzz will centre around his successor Donald Trump; who reclaimed the presidency in the recently concluded 2024 US Elections. At the APEC and G20 Summits, Biden will privately meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders in Lima. Although no major deals are expected, discussions will likely span trade, security, and alliance-building. Joe Biden’s presidency focused on strengthening NATO and countering China in the Indo-Pacific. Trump’s victory signals a shift as he vowed to impose steep tariffs, especially on Chinese goods, and appears set to ease US support for Ukraine. As Biden bids farewell, the world anticipates a shift in US diplomacy under Trump’s ‘America First’ policy.
