Kyiv (Ukraine), December 21: Ukraine will halt the transit of Russian gas through its territory starting Jan. 1, 2025, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported on Friday, citing Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
"At 7:00 a.m. (GMT 0500), the transit will be physically blocked," Shmyhal told the parliament.
The resumption of gas transit would be only possible at the request of the European Commission and if Ukraine transports non-Russian gas, he added.
At the same time, Shmyhal noted that Ukraine remains obligated to continue the transit of Russian oil under the Association Agreement with the European Union (EU) and the Energy Charter Treaty.
Ukraine used to be a key transit route for Russian gas supplies to Europe.
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev will not extend its five-year gas transportation deal with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024.
